Jazz te Gast

A musical adventure for young and experienced musicians alike

Zuidhorn, a stone’s throw away from Groningen, plays host to a special jazz event every two years. Top international artists and talented young musicians find one another for an exciting musical adventure.

Jazz te Gast (Jazz-Guest) is known as a unique makers’ festival. Musicians create new music together on the spot and then perform it in the gardens bordering the village’s main street. According to the organisers, the strength of the festival lies in this unpredictability. This generates plenty of artistic innovation and curiosity.

Spin-off at the Bimhuis

How does it work? How does it work? Before the festival starts, an Artist Entrepreneur and an international Artist in Residence are recruited. Both of these are top level musicians passionate about the adventurous concept and together find a group of improvising musicians. Under the direction of these two artists, the group of talented young musicians set to work creating new material. The following day, they share their music on different stages at the gardens, ending in a grand final concert. In a spin-off, the following Sunday there will be a concert at Amsterdam’s Bimhuis.

75 musicians

2024 marked the fifth edition of this music sanctuary in which 75 musicians participated. Featuring conductor-composer Tijn Wybenga as artist entrepreneur. Trumpeter Avishai Cohen as artist in residence and Felix Schlarmann as programmer.
