Treasury of Saint Servatius

Heritage preserved for future generations

The Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht houses an extraordinary church treasure. This collection is highly regarded internationally, but it isn’t in a very good condition. If we want to preserve this heritage for future generations, we need to act fast.

Saint Servatius was a 4th-century bishop of Tongeren He relocated his diocese to Maastricht, where he reportedly died in 384 AD. A burial chapel was built on top of his grave. Over the centuries, the chapel became what we know today as the basilica. Including a treasury that continued to be filled with relics.

Emergency chest

Among the masterpieces is the bust of Saint Servatius dating from around 1400, in which a large part of his skull is preserved. The bust is made up of precious metal and gemstones. The same is true of the so-called Emergency Chest. Inside are the remains of several Holy Bishops. This shrine was used in times of need and carried through the city in procession, like during the plague epidemic of 1475. In fact, the shrine continues to be carried around in processions during the septennial Pilgrimage of the Relics.

Ancient display cabinets

Today, the treasures are not sufficiently protected. The display cabinets are antiquated. Improvements are needed in climate control. There is a need for structural alterations. At the same time, we will use this opportunity to renew the permanent exhibition to ensure that the stories underlying this cultural heritage will appeal to a younger audience.
