Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar

A place where past and present meet

Most people visit the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar for its art, culture and Alkmaar’s historical past. However, in order to reach a wider audience, the permanent exhibition will be redesigned. As a result, the visitors will be able to learn more about the history of the city and the local region in a contemporary way.

The Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar opened in 1875 and is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. It has been housed in a modern building in the historical city centre since 2000. Its permanent exhibition needs to be renewed to make it more attractive to people who would not normally wander into a museum. The aim: to increase the number of visitors by 20 per cent.

To realise this goal, the museum now presents its collection interactively. The paintings, drawings, sculptures and utensils will be brought to life under the motto Allemaal Alkmaar (Everyone Alkmaar). They will tell visitors their very own story about the city and region’s past. A story that is reflected in the present.

Personal stories

A new feature of the museum are the mini-exhibitions for which a resident of Alkmaar will be invited as guest curator every six months. They select an object and explain the significance it has for them. In the same way Allemaal Alkmaar does, the museum wants to show the diversity of the city both past and present.
