Doornenburg Castle

More space dedicated to stories of the past

Doornenburg Castle is the place where television series Floris was shot, the Netherlands’ most watched programme of 1969. Today, the castle is as popular as ever. In the near future, visitors will even be able to walk along parapet. From up there, you can look out across the fields, just like the medieval castle dwellers did.

A parapet is a walkway at the top of the castle wall. The one at Doornenburg Castle extends alongside the largest castle frontage in the Netherlands, but is currently inaccessible to visitors, as there is no guardrail. The contribution from Dioraphte will provide this, one that reflects the monumental stature of the castle. The Stichting tot Behoud van den Doornenburg (the Foundation for preservation of the Doornenburg) intends to attract more visitors this way.

Storytelling

At the castle there are many activities aimed at recounting stories from the past. Over 3,000 people visit the Battle of Doornenburg each year. This is a Medieval festival involving actors re-enacting scenes, youth theatre, jousting tournaments, art and music, coupled with an educational programme about times of old. Subsequently, there is always a marked uptick in the number of requests for tours.

Extra exhibition space

The adaptation of the parapet will provide three additional rooms which are currently inaccessible. Visitors will shortly have access to these rooms for temporary exhibitions. That way, Doornenburg will be able to present all kinds of interesting facts about the castle that were previously underexposed.
