Betje Wolff Museum

Step into the life of another era

In Middenbeemster one finds the house in which Betje Wolff lived from 1759 to 1777. She was the wife of the local vicar, but most importantly she was a writer. Since 1950, the house has been used as a museum, albeit bursting at the seams these days. Upgrades are urgently needed.

Betje Wolff was an independent, effervescent mind who wrote with an incisive voice about issues that still matter today. She wrote innumerable poems and articles from her attic room and her popularity increased over the years. Today, you can still view her writing room as well as many features in the house that evoke the atmosphere of Betje Wolff’s time. The period rooms that belonged to other residents have also been preserved over the centuries.

A new entrance in the works

The house – which is managed by the Historical Society Beemster – is not only a museum. It also hosts workshops, literary evenings and lessons for primary school pupils. But the space is limited and the entrance confined. There is barely room for a coat rack, reception or school bags. For this reason, an annex is planned that can welcome visitors more effectively and provide additional facilities.
