Digital literacy for healthy motherhood

Uganda continues to experience unnecessarily high rates in maternal and infant mortality. Providing accurate information about pregnancy and the period that follows can prevent this. The training of nurses and midwives and the provision of information for pregnant women should significantly reduce the mortality rate.

In Northern Uganda, many infants continue to die during childbirth or during the early years of their lives. Similarly, expectant mothers do not always survive their pregnancy or childbirth. The Health[e]Foundation has a wealth of experience in educating (expectant) mothers and their care providers. The main successes include mixed programmes combining traditional face-to-face training with e-learning. This significantly increases both the accessibility and reach of quality education.

Combined training

Under the slogan Empowering Healthcare Heroes, nurses and midwives in Northern Uganda receive such combined training. This will cover, for example, topics such as a healthy pregnancy, neonatal care, nutrition and providing emergency care in the event of complications during childbirth. Using the LUCY Care App, healthcare providers will be able to present essential health information to pregnant women who do not own a smartphone. Mothers and expectant mothers with a phone can access the LUCY Mom App. This helps women to keep track of their appointments with healthcare providers, amongst other benefits. Plus, it provides them with information on pregnancy and nurturing their baby.

Strengthening local partners

Local partners play a significant role during the further development of the digital modules and LUCY apps . Furthermore, Health[e]Foundation supports those partners to implement training and outreach independently. This enables them to continue their activities after the project is completed. Health[e]Foundation will continue to work to improve the e-learning platform and is committed to increasing the global reach of the LUCY apps.
